With a fearsome rage, the ferocious wind tore into the steep, rocky rise. The gust would hurl one off the vertical mesa face if hooves mis-stepped on the polished, unstable stone. The sight of rocks falling from the heavens to the river far below was a vertiginous nightmare. Falkar’s stomach plummeted, just like the boulders.

Tremnar spoke, as he frequently did, whether Falkar apprehended his words over the fierce howling winds. The chieftain was far too preoccupied with averting death on the sheer cliffs below.

“How are you doing?” the archer asked from time to time, his hair flowing wildly in the strong breeze.

“Who came up with this poor idea?” Falkar yelled.

Tremnar laughed, “You, I believe.”

“So a fool then.” Both roared.

Unrelenting gales challenged every step until they finally hit the peak. Tremnar knelt at the summit, offering his hand to his apprehensive leader. Falkar strained to grasp his friend’s hand when, to his horror, he slipped from his friend’s grasp and fell backwards. Tremnar grabbed for Falkar’s hand in a mad panic but gripped only air.

Suddenly, a massive shadow subsequently surrounded the archer, blackening out much of the hillside in the shade. Behind Tremnar, a towering cyclops bent and snatched the frightened chieftain mid descent. The monolithic creature heaved Falkar to safety with one gargantuan hand to the rocks above. Falkar’s heart exploded in his rib cage from the terror of escaping one potential demise, only to be face to face with another. The creature’s head alone was as tall as the centaur’s entire body. With no place or time to run and hide, Falkar awaited his death, only to realize it wasn’t pending. The cyclops’s expression displayed genuine concern for Falkar’s well-being. It stared with a look of worry on its stupid face. It raised its towering hand to the centaur. Falkar braced himself for death, only to feel the cyclops gently stroke Falkar’s shoulder and tilt its head questioningly. This was nothing like their experience with the cyclops the day before. As if to soothe the warrior, the creature repeatedly shushed Falkar. Was it trying to give a false sense of security before it attacked or was it meaning no threat? Falkar remained on his guard.

The stupid beast stared curiously at Falkar uttering guttural sounds and child-like words that could hardly be called language. Most of the communication from the gigantic creature was grunts and ape-like chatter and cooing. Soon it was clear to Falkar that the one eyed beast was gentle and meant no harm. Its eye was a light brown, its single brow bushy and its face was a gnarled landscape of wrinkles and scars.

“He won’t hurt you.” A centaur walking towards the cyclops startled Falkar. “He likes everyone.” The new centaur scratched the towering beast behind its ear and the creature smiled and leaned into the show of affection.

“How?” was the only word Falkar could force out.

The stranger smiled. “Come with me and I’ll show you.”
